Work Zone Safety Training

As the leading organization in roadway safety training, the National Safety Council has developed life-saving temporary traffic control (TTC) work zone training. Based on the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) guidelines and the American National Standards Institute requirements, these courses provide hands-on interactive activities that help individuals learn to do their job safely.

Infrastructure across the country is growing. Roadways are added, updated and changed daily. As a result, the need for safe work zones has never been more critical for workers and drivers. NSC has three work zone training courses – flagger, technician and supervisor – which all promote a safe environment for workers and roadway users in TTC work zones.

Flagger - The NSC Work Zone Flagger Program teaches roadway personnel how to provide safe passage of traffic through and around TTC work zones. This certification course is essential for workers required to conduct flagging operations as a part of their job.

Participants will learn:

  • Key flagging procedures
  • Critical do’s and don’ts for flaggers
  • How to keep themselves, roadway users and their crew safe

Technician

This is a one-day introductory course that provides technical training designed directly for roadway personnel to learn the logistics associated with a TTC work zone. Participants will be taught concepts and techniques to properly install, modify, maintain and/or remove TTC devices required in work zones.

This course was designed to be practical and realistic, with hands-on activities that represent real-life work zone scenarios. The program’s activities are highly interactive for participants to better understand the MUTCD, its terminology, the use of signs and appropriate channelizing devices, and how to calculate taper lengths.

The program also satisfies OSHA requirements 1926.21(b)(2), General Safety and Health where the “employer shall instruct each employee in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and the regulations applicable to their work environment to control or eliminate any hazards or other exposure to illness or injury.”

Participants will learn:

  • Practices to allow for safety for all users and workers in work zones
  • How to calculate minimum taper lengths and correct methods to install, maintain and/or remove TTC devices
  • How to understand and implement the MUTCD guidelines

Supervisor – This two-day certification course prepares work zone supervisors to interpret, adapt and implement traffic control plans. It focuses on specific job responsibilities and covers information in parts I, V, and VI of the MUTCD.

This course is essential for anyone with experience working in a TTC work zone, and project engineers who want to understand the requirements imposed on work site traffic supervisors. Participants will gain the skills and knowledge to interpret, verify the accuracy of, and implement a safe and approved temporary traffic control plan.

Participants will learn:

  • Techniques to increase the safety level in work zones
  • Interpret and implement critical MUTCD guidelines
  • How to design work zones that are safe for workers and roadway users
